Blind self-portraits
Inspired by Caitlin Metz’s book Feel Something, Make Something (which I HIGHLY recommend), I’ve been making blind contour self-portraits lately. Here are a few. My favorite thing about these is the 2 step process.
First, the drawing. No looking at the paper, no thinking about what it looks like, just focusing on the mirror and the little details that you see. It’s very grounding and meditative.
Next, the captioning. When I feel like I’m done and look down at the page, I get an immediate hit of emotion. An immediate impression of who this person on the paper is and what they are feeling. I put that into words on the page and it is complete.
